On Tuesday, July 14, 2015, FreshPoint Connecticut held their 39th annual Spudman Open Charity Golf Tournament.

Over 200 customers and employees took to the Tunxis Plantation Country Club Golf Course in Farmington, Connecticut to raise money for several charities including the Arthritis Foundation. Over the years, FreshPoint Connecticut has donated more than half a million dollars to local charities through this tournament.

We call it the Spudman because when the tournament originally started, we had a crew of guys that would re-pack potatoes in one of our buildings at the Regional Market. That’s all they did, all day long, was pack potatoes into bags. They were known as Spudmen… They started the golf tournament out of fun (in order to get a day off) and it quickly became a charity event.

The potato costume became the mascot thanks to the Idaho potato commission.

In addition to the philanthropic benefits, employees and customers mingled on the 45 hole golf course, and enjoyed a family-style steak dinner featuring local corn on the cob under The Pavilion. Players made new connections and also tested their skills in Bocce and Horseshoe tournaments. Many took big prizes from on-going raffles.

It was a great day of fun in the sun for everyone, and the team building spirit was undeniable.
