Description:
The official name of this pepper is The Jimmy Nardello Sweet Italian Frying Pepper. The pepper is named after Jimmy Nardello, the man who brought the seeds over from Southern Italy in 1887 and donated the rest of his seeds just before his death in 1983. This vibrantly red pepper is characteristically unique because of its color and random tendency to have a corkscrew shape.
The Jimmy Nardello’s are listed as endangered on the US Ark of Taste by the Slow Food USA; similar to the Wildlife Endangered Species List but for rare produce. These heirloom peppers are a rare variety that have a deep rooted history and are making a comeback into restaurants because of their sweet flavor, beautiful coloring, and diversity in the kitchen.
These peppers are great for pickling, frying, drying or eating raw. When raw, they are light and sweet, and when fried they become creamy and soft. The Nardello Family has a tradition of drying then frying the pepper with Smelts and Baccala for Christmas dinner. They are great substitutes for Bell Peppers to being a sweetness and vibrancy to dishes.
