Video: The Tangelo–It’s Big on Flavor
Chef Dan from FreshPoint Central Florida talks to us today about the Tangelo.
I wanted to talk to you a little bit today about my favorite member of the citrus family.
We all know the orange and grapefruit, as well as tangerine, but the Tangelo is the unsung hero. I’ve brought with me today the Orlando Tangelo. Kind of like me, it’s short and squat, this orange is full of flavor.
The browning on it is wind scarring, which is typical of Florida citrus.
Tangelos are mostly seedless, and can actually get as high as 35 seeds per fruit, depending on how many times a bee has visited the blossom to pollinate. You can see this one’s got a little more. The flavor is honey-sweet, slightly acidic, and very seasonal, available through the end of February.
The Orlando Tangelo is very seasonal, and is only available until the end of February.
