Fruit expert David Karp explained Wild Strawberries in a New York Times article (April 15, 2005): ” A different species from common strawberries, they have been cultivated in Europe since the Middle Ages, but they are delicate and small, an impossible combination for commercial growers.” Karp reports that there are several different strains of Wild Strawberries, which explains why the Wild Strawberries we are currently receiving have a larger than usual berry size. Though they’ re larger than we’ re used to, these berries have the ethereal fragrance and Jolly Rancher flavor that make Wild Strawberries a rare treat.
