Description:
The Galia Melon bears the name of the family in Israel attributed with its creation, and is a relative of the Ogen melon, another Israeli cultivar. Small and round, with cantaloupe-esque netting over yellow rind, Galias have pale green, almost white, sweet, juicy flesh and can be powerfully aromatic. Galias have been gaining in popularity, and therefore acreage devoted to their plantings, over the past ten years. Melon is usually eaten fresh. The ancient custom of filling the melon’s cavity with port wine and serving it as an appetizer was practiced by the popes, who used a sweeter wine. Other good companion flavors include ginger, lemon, lime and sherry. Melon flavors meld well with prosciutto or other dried meats, smoked fish, and cheese.
