Description:
Just as fun as it is to say “Olallieberry”, it is to eat them! The Olallieberry has similar characteristics to the Blackberry – in color and tangy, sweet – but the Olallieberry is larger in size and sweeter than Blackberries. These plump and bumpy Berries are juicy, sweet, and delicious with deep wine-y notes.
The name “Olallie” derives from the Native American word for Blackberry, so essentially you’re saying “Berry Berry”. It is a cross between a Loganberry – a Blackberry and Raspberry hybrid, and a Youngberry- a Blackberry variety. The Berry was developed at Oregon State University in 1949 but it was unsuccessful in that growing environment; however it thrives in central California’s climate.
They are perfect for pies, cobblers or shortcake biscuits. They have a fair amount of pectin, therefore, they hold well in a filling without having to add too much sugar or cornstarch so you really get that Berry taste!
