Description:
Also known as Chinese jujubes, Chinese apples or Chinese dates (anab in Arabic, zizifa in Greek, bor in India, and natsume in Japan), Jujubes have been cultivated in Northern China for more than 4,000 years and are now grown extensively in India, Asian, Southern Europe and more recently on the West Coast of the United States and in Australia. Jujubes, which ripen in the autumn, can be oblong, egg-shaped or round. They have crisp pearly white flesh enclosing a single pit, with the sweet flavor and texture of an unripe pear. Most 8s are deep brown when ripe, but can be bought while still firm but orange-red or green with just a hint of brown and left at room temperature for a day or two to ripen. They can be eaten raw, stewed with orange juice, candied or made into jams and jellies. They are renowned for their health benefits. A jujube a day?
