Description:
Savor the fruits of the Mexican Hawthorne tree at their best. These tiny, bittersweet fruits are often mistaken for the crabapple, but have a flavor all their own. Tejocotes range in color from scarlet-orange to golden yellow. They have become an integral part of Mexican celebrations, particularly those that begin in October with the Day of the Dead continuing through the Christmas season and La Posada. The bright orange and yellow hues of the Tejocote can be seen decorating homes and adorning altars as offerings South of the border. But eating Tejocotes is a traditional seasonal treat. Tejocote can be eaten fresh and is often enjoyed out of hand, but its sweetly sour tropical flavor is perfect for a remarkable sorbet or mousse. It has also become an important ingredient in candy and preserves. During holiday festivals in Mexico, it is combined with guava, plum, mandarin, cinnamon and other juices for a fruity, warm winter beverage that warms body and soul.
