Video: Blueberries–super quick facts about this superfruit

Chef Dan tells us some super quick facts about blueberries: the superfruit.

Let’s talk a little bit about blueberries.

The blueberry crop starts in Florida, works its way up the eastern seaboard into Georgia, the Carolinas, New Jersey, and finally finishing in Michigan.

Southern blueberry production isn’t without its challenges, though.

Low yields, typically four to five pounds per bush, and high per-acreage cost often in excess of $20,000 per acre make it a challenging, but very valuable crop.

Did you know:

  • Early American settlers mixed blueberry skins with milk to create a gray-toned paint used to paint their furniture. The shakers were especially known for this.
  • Early Native Americans referred to the blueberries as star berries, because of the star-shaped indention on the bottom of every berry.

Blueberries are available year round, but they tend to move around a bit, and based on growing regions, have peak seasons.
